For Immediate Release:

TUCSON, Ariz. (September 5, 2024) – Tucson ER & Hospital’s team unveiled new insights demonstrating how an innovative tool can help reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics to treat viral infections. This approach aims to prevent emergency room patients from developing antimicrobial resistance, which can render antibiotic drugs ineffective when they are truly needed.

Five members from the team at Tucson ER & Hospital, including emergency room physicians Dr. Brian DuChateau and Dr. T Gottlied, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sean Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Christopher Tarr, and the Director of Laboratory Services, Sherry Spies, presented their research and analyzed data on how the MeMed BV Test can significantly reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics for viral infections treatment in the emergency department. The research abstract was shared at the annual American Association of Diagnostic and Laboratory Medicine conference in Chicago last month, after conducting a study in their free-standing ER from January 2023 to June 2023.

Emergency departments have been experiencing significant challenges in accurately and promptly diagnosing viral versus bacterial infections due to high patient volumes and inadequate staffing. This has led to the overuse of antibiotics as the standard treatment for all patients. Unfortunately, this overuse has contributed to an increase in antimicrobial resistance among patients, rendering these drugs ineffective when truly needed.

The Tucson ER & Hospital’s team presented real-world data to hundreds of global leaders in laboratory medicine, showing the MeMed BV test in the emergency room, which quickly distinguishes bacterial and viral infections in 15 minutes or less and supports the safe and appropriate administration of antibiotics.

“We were excited about incorporating state-of-the-art technology to assist with accurate patient diagnoses. The MeMed BV is a great example of new technology that can help provide the best patient care,” said Dr. Tarr. “We are proud to be a part of the clinical research that examines actual patient outcomes.”

This presentation reflects Tucson ER & Hospital’s staff mission to be innovative and transformative leaders in medicine and emergency rooms worldwide.

Tucson ER & Hospital invites the community, colleagues, and friends to celebrate their team on this well-deserved accomplishment.
